The Only Dumb Questions
|
» Reference | ||
This page contains many of the commonly asked questions regarding MxDC. Due to the potential volume of questions which might ultimately come to be listed on this page, we have opted to sort everything into categories, and then place that sorting into a hidden blind. Click on the appropriate category button below to reveal the contents of that blind. Utlimately we plan to make this an intellihanced sorting forum. Q::A:: Q:: Do I need to post a "Try-Out" for My Chosen CharacterA:: Not at this time, simply complete the character app in good faith and begin posting. If there is question to how you are writing the character you may be asked to write an audition based on a site given senario so we can take a deeper look at how you see the character and if that vision of that character is right for our site. Q:: What is an INHERENT CHARACTER (IH)A:: An inherent character is the same as a Featured Character. An IH is inherently innate to a particular fandom or canon. Example: Examples of ICs include Harry Potter(Potter-verse), Wonder woman (The DC Extended Universe), and Winnie the Pooh (The 100 Acre-verse). Note that these examples are not necessarily acceptable as characters here. Q:: Can I Use AI GENERATED ART?A:: Yes. AI-generated images are allowed as long as they are real to hyper-realistic and clearly depict the character properly. For many, particularly those creating original characters (OCs), AI art enables these characters to appear with the same depth and conviction as Featured Characters (FCs). Q:: What is an INHERENT IMAGE?A:: An image clearly depicting a specific character from a particular canon or fandom. This generally applies to illustrations of the character but may also extend to photographs when there is enough makeup or CGI that the actor becomes unrecognizable. Examples of such "Inherent Images" include Groot, who has been portrayed by multiple actors such as Vin Diesel, Krystian Godlewski, and Terry Notary, all of whom contributed to bringing the character to life. Another example is Nebula, portrayed by Karen Gillan, or Malekith the Accursed, played by Christopher Eccleston in Thor: The Dark World (2013). In both cases, even their own mothers might struggle to recognize them beneath the extensive makeup and CGI work. Ultimately, an inherent image is one that unmistakably depicts a specific character and cannot easily be associated with another without stretching the audience’s suspension of disbelief. Q:: How many character threads can I haveA:: You can have as many threads as you can maintain without causing bottlenecks, as long as you believe you can keep up with your characters. If staff notices you struggling to manage your threads, we may send you a message to check in and make sure you’re okay. Q:: What TYPES OF CHARACTERS CURRENTLY ALLOWED?A:: MCU Characters: We are currently in Phase I of our development cycle. At this time, we are allowing non-villain characters who can be logically integrated into an MCu-themed setting. While most active characters are mutants, not all characters need to be—however, they must make sense as regulars at the Avengers Compound. For example, Janet Van Dyne (The Wasp) fits this setting, while the Hellfire Club’s White Queen (a villain), Emma Frost, does not. Additionally, we are now allowing MCU characters who primarily operate on Earth and can easily be localized to the New York area, which is central to the MCU. In late February, we plan to expand the game world to include characters from the X-Men and logical extensions of both the Avengers and the X-Men as we work toward an Avengers vs. X-Men (AvX)-style event. Q:: Do I Have To use the Canonical Faceclaim?A:: Yes, with some exceptions. Casting choices like Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury were spot on. However, others, such as Jeremy Renner, missed the mark, and we have opted for Jensen Ackles, whom Marvel originally wanted to cast but was unable to accept the role due to scheduling conflicts with his TV series Supernatural. We try not to involve any meta-reasoning regarding casting decisions and simply evaluate the character when we ask, "Is this a good casting?" Q:: Are ORIGINAL CHARACTERS (OCs) WELCOMED HERE?A:: OCs are more than welcome! They can be part of any open faction/group. Q:: How Are CHARACTERS FROM ALTERNATIVE UNIVERSES HANDLED?A:: The short answer is they are handled on a case-by-case basis. Characters like Miles Morales (Ultimate Spider-Man), Gwen Stacy (Spider-Gwen), and others from the Multiverse, such as Loki-gator, can exist here as long as their arrival can be logically explained without requiring any other characters to undergo revision. What matters is that the character feels like they’re adding something to this universe, not taking away from it. Q:: How Are The AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. BEING HANDLED?A:: Currently, they exist, but the series itself, like 'The Inhumans' are not canon at this time. We choose to draw on the spirit of the series and it's source material an are doing our own thing at this time. Q:: How Are The GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY BEING HANDLED?A:: Currently, they exist somewhere out there, but they aren’t part of the active canon list as Marvel Champions is focused on Earth. Q:: How Is The FANTASTIC FOUR BEING HANDLED?A:: As with the X-Men movies, we are not directly folding the Fantastic Four movies into Marvel Champions. However, the core tenets of their origin are included: they went into space, were caught in an unprecedented cosmic storm, gained superpowers, survived their crash landing back on Earth, and went on to prove themselves as the "Fantastic Four." Q:: Whats up with QUICKSILVER & THE SCARLET WITCH?A:: We are embracing the MCU version of the Maximoffs (Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen). Pietro is considered to have been severely injured during the Sokovian Incident (Age of Ultron), but he did not die (because having a speedster die from a bullet is poor writing and lazy plotting). He was brought back to Avengers Tower, where Doctor Cho, with help from Doctor Banner and Tony Stark, was able to help Quicksilver recover from his injuries sustained while saving Hawkeye. They are the mutant offspring of Magneto. Q:: Are the FOX X FILMS CANON?A:: Yes and no. We draw from the first two X-Men films (X1 2000, X2 2003) for the environment, mood, and general setup, but not for continuity. Continuity-wise, we reference these movies mainly for how the Xavier Institute looks and operates, and little else. The X-Men exist in seclusion and prefer to maintain a low profile. Q:: What is CONSIDERED CANON TO THE MCu?A:: Below is a list of MCU properties, those in green are considered to be canon to the MCu.
* Some events revised, see timeline for details / ask for clarification! * Is not considered canon or has not yet happened / ask for clarification Q:: How do I make a characterA:: If you’ve explored our site, you’ve likely noticed that there isn’t a standard HTML application template for you to copy and fill out—because there isn’t one. Instead of expecting you to "code up" your character, we’ve created an automated character creation system made up of several forms for you to complete. Each form includes all the necessary information and tips to help you, so you won’t have to search our site (or others) to prepare your character for submission.
Flesh out your character details to the best of your abilities. Feel free to use our resource libraries, which provide descriptions of powers, skills, equipment, and more to assist you in developing your character. Q:: What are the IMAGE DIMENSIONS FOR CHARACTER DOSSIERS?A:: We use four (4) standard dimensions across our site for simplicity. While multiple variations of these dimensions are used in different places, the aspect ratios remain consistent. When you upload an image, our system will automatically generate all necessary versions and thumbnails, convert everything into the webp format to optimize file size, and speed up download times. This makes the site faster, more responsive, and reduces site wait time for you, allowing you to focus on roleplaying your characters. The images will be deployed seamlessly where needed when needed so you don't have too. Example: BUTTONS: 250 wide by 250 tall* LANDSCAPES: 1280 wide by 626 tall* SPOTLIGHTS: 250 wide by 500 tall* PROFILES: 500 wide by 500 tall* Q:: How many characters can I haveA:: One. If you prove you can handle that one, you can have two. If you prove you can handle two, then you can have three, and so on and so forth with a hard limit set at five (5) Q:: How Many ACCOUNTS DO I NEED?A:: One. In the spirit of simplicity, we have chosen to use OMMMs, which, among other things, allows users to manage everything—from characters and images to their OOC site presence—using a single account. There's no need to link accounts or attempt brain surgery. Marvel-Champions is a true single-login site, with no need for account switching or workaround attempts. Q:: Why are metahumans so hot?A:: The real reason, of course, is that superheroes are our modern gods, visualized by artists. By their very nature, they are hyper-idealized versions of humanity, showcasing beauty, oddness, or even ugliness—there's little room for the "middle of the road." This legacy results in characters who are movie-star handsome, with physiques that surpass Olympians; they are like Greek myths, idealized distillations of perfection.
Q:: Why are mutants feared when metahumans are not?A:: It is the inherent fear of the "other," the outsider within, that their children represent something different. This inherent "otherness" heralds the evolutionary end of Homo sapiens as a species, giving way to the advancement of Homo sapiens superior. This fear stems from the anxiety of obsolescence and the specter of death itself. Just as Homo sapiens, the first "humans" as we understand them, went to war with Cro-Magnon Man 10,000 years ago and emerged victorious, extinguishing that species, there is a fear that Homo sapiens superior may do the same to Homo sapiens sapiens.
However, we understand that addressing perceived disagreements can sometimes be tricky. If you have an issue with a member of staff, please reach out to Ditko. Staff members help guide the direction of the site and ensure it grows positively, always striving to be kind and helpful. If a staff member isn't acting this way, let Ditko know before the situation escalates into personal drama. Q:: How to GET STARTEDA:: Look the site over, starting with the guides which cover everything from how to join Marvel-Champions, to rules, to story and plot. We think that by looking over our guides you will be able to tell if Marvel-Champions is something that you're interested in. If so, join our Discord Chat, reach out to a member of staff, discuss possible characters, settle on one, join Marvel-Champions website, and make your character.If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to a staff member via Discord Q:: Are ORIGINAL CHARACTERS (OCs) WELCOMED HERE?A:: OCs are more than welcome! Marvel Champions Universe (MCu), in contrast, is set in Earth-199999v132. The "v" signifies that we are a variant of the main MCU timeline as depicted in the movies. Everything that is canon in the films and Disney+ series is canon in Marvel Champions, starting with the first Iron Man film through Avengers: Age of Ultron. Our timeline branches away from the MCU when Doctor Cho's cradle, which was originally used to heal otherwise fatal wounds, is used to save Quicksilver during the Battle of Sokovia, after he shielded Hawkeye. Aside from this deviation, our variant closely follows the general MCU 199999 timeline. Q:: Are the FOX X FILMS CANON?A:: Yes and no. * Some events revised, see timeline for details / ask for clarification! * Is not considered canon or has not yet happened / ask for clarification Q:: Do I Need To Know The Site Canon (History)?A:: Not much. As mentioned in various sections, we use a "hyper-continuity" approach for interactive storytelling. Any meaningful game information is front-loaded via news articles—our version of the Daily Bugle—for the community to consume. Specific or additional details related to an event that your character might need to know will appear on your personal dashboard, ensuring easy access. This information can be updated as needed by staff and may redact past events, situations, or actions involving characters that are no longer in play. We believe this hyper-continuity approach helps keep everyone engaged—and if Marvel can do it, so can we, right? Q:: How Much Do I Need To Know ABOUT SITE CANON?A:: Not much. We use a system called "hyper-time," meaning that as stories progress, any relevant information you need will be provided. Our stories are crafted to be accessible to newcomers, so you only need a basic understanding of the MCU, like knowing Spider-Man operates in New York or that Thor has a great hairdresser. Q:: What happened to THE INFINITY STONES?A:: Following the rules of E=MC2, neither energy nor matter can be destroyed; they can only change form. For example, a block of ice left in the Sahara will turn to water, then to steam, and finally to moisture in the air. Hence, the stones exist in some shape, in some form, somewhere...
Example: BUTTONS: 250 wide by 250 tall* LANDSCAPES: 1280 wide by 626 tall* SPOTLIGHTS: 250 wide by 500 tall* PROFILES: 500 wide by 500 tall* Q:: What are the IMAGE DIMENSIONS FOR MEMBER PROFILES?A:: We use four (4) standard dimensions across our site for simplicity. Q:: Why Does STAFF SOMETIMES TAKE A WHILE TO RESPOND?A:: We currently have very few staff members, and most of us are focused on site building. We promise that we will respond, but it might take a day, so please be patient with us. We will get back to you as soon as possible. Q:: When should I ASK A QUESTION?A:: When you have one. Whatever it is, ask, and we will help you. If staff seems unhelpful, reach out to Ditko, who believes that staff is always here to assist. Q:: What do I do if I HAVE AN ISSUE WITH A MEMBER OF STAFF?A:: Ideally, you would reach out to them directly and try to resolve things. Q:: Do I Need To Know The Site Canon (History)?A:: Not much.
